Ring lights and video lighting buying guide

Good lighting is the biggest upgrade for video, and it does not need to be expensive.

1. Adjustable colour temperature lets you match room lights and avoids odd skin tones.
2. Place the light slightly above eye level and close, which softens shadows.
3. Larger light sources are softer; a tiny bright light looks harsh.
4. Check the stand height and stability, and whether it also holds a phone.
5. If you wear glasses, a ring light can show a reflection; move it a little off-axis.

Common mistake: Buying only the brightest light instead of one with a dimmer and warm and cool settings.
