Mechanical keyboards buying guide
Switch type changes how a keyboard sounds and feels more than any other spec.
- Linear switches feel smooth, tactile switches have a bump, and clicky switches are loud; if others share your space, avoid clicky.
- Hot-swappable boards let you change switches later without soldering.
- Layout matters: full-size has a number pad; tenkeyless and 75 percent layouts save desk space.
- Wireless models are convenient, but check the battery life and whether they also work over a cable.
- Keycap material affects feel and longevity: PBT resists shine better than ABS.
Common mistake: Ordering a compact layout without checking that the keys you use daily (arrows, function row) are still there.
