Discount calculator

Find the sale price, the percent off or the original price in seconds.

About this tool

Quick answer: A discount calculator works out what you pay after a percentage is taken off, how big a discount really is, or what the price was before the sale. Enter two numbers and choose what you want to find. Two discounts in a row are combined correctly.

How to use it

  1. Choose what you want to find: the price after a discount, the percent off, the original price, or two discounts in a row.
  2. Type the numbers you know. The answer and the working appear as you type.
  3. Looking at a real deal? Use the deal checker to see if the price is as good as it looks.

Example: 25% off an $80 item

Original price$80.00
Discount25%
You save$20.00
You pay$60.00

Formula: 80 × (1 − 0.25) = 60.

Good to know

Two discounts are not added

A 20% discount followed by another 20% takes off 36%, not 40%, because the second 20% applies to the already reduced price.

Finding the original price

Divide the sale price by one minus the discount. If an item costs $45 after 40% off, it used to cost 45 ÷ 0.60 = $75.

Tax and shipping

Sales tax is normally added after the discount and depends on where you live, so it isn't included. Check delivery costs separately.

Frequently asked questions

How do I calculate percent off?

Subtract the sale price from the original price, divide the result by the original price, then multiply by 100. For example, (100 − 72) ÷ 100 × 100 = 28% off.

Do two discounts add up?

No. Each discount applies to the price left after the previous one, so two 20% discounts equal 36% off in total.

How do I find the original price from the sale price?

Divide the sale price by one minus the discount as a decimal. If a price is $45 after 40% off, divide 45 by 0.60 to get $75.

Does this calculator store what I type?

No. The maths runs in your browser and nothing is sent or saved.
