Deal checker: is this a good deal?
Type the price you see and get a plain verdict, with the reasons.
About this tool
Quick answer: The deal checker compares the price you are seeing with a price you have really seen. If it is at least 15% lower it looks like a good deal, 5 to 15% lower looks fair, and anything less looks weak. It uses only the numbers you type and does not track prices.
How to use it
- Enter the price you are seeing now.
- Add the crossed-out price, and a price you have really seen for the same item (from earlier shopping or your own notes).
- Choose the kind of product to get a checklist that fits it.
- Read the verdict and the reasons, then check the points listed under it before you buy.
Example
| Price you see | $80 |
|---|---|
| Crossed-out price | $140 |
| Price you usually see | $100 |
| Verdict | Looks like a good deal: 20% below the usual price |
| Warning | The crossed-out price is 40% above the usual price, so the headline saving is overstated |
The 43% shown off $140 sounds bigger than the real saving of 20% against what you normally see.
Good to know
Why a big percentage off can mislead
A crossed-out price on any store can be higher than the product usually sells for. The best reference is a price you have actually seen.
What to check besides price
The return window, who is selling the item, whether it is the current model, and the warranty. For gadgets, battery life, fit and compatibility with your phone often matter more than a small price gap.
When to wait
If a big shopping event is close, waiting can pay off for things you don't need straight away, though a better price is never guaranteed. See the sale calendar for the next event.
Frequently asked questions
Does the deal checker use Amazon prices?
No. It only uses the numbers you type and does not look up or store prices. That also means it cannot tell you a product's lowest price ever, because this site does not track price history.
What discount counts as a good deal?
There is no single answer. Our rule of thumb is that a price at least 15% below the price you usually see is a good deal. That is our own guideline, not data about any product.
Why does it say it can't tell?
When you give only the crossed-out price, there is nothing to confirm that price was ever the usual one. Add a price you have really seen to get a verdict.
Does this tool store what I type?
No. Everything runs in your browser and nothing is sent or saved.
